It turned out that the end of the world was the beginning of a new one.

Edmund refused to believe it would be that easy.

'Ed, for heaven's sake,' said Peter exasperatedly, as they rode towards Cair Paravel, where Peter would take the throne and a new Golden Age would begin. 'Look around you. Who do you not see?'

Edmund glared at his brother. 'You never approved of this, this thing between Caspian and I. Never. So you will kindly refrain from poking your nose into business that doesn't concern you, brother dear.'

'The demeanour and concentration-spans of my two most valuable advisors and co-rulers is nothing but my business, brother dear.' Peter sighed. 'And if Aslan has no issues with your choice of .. friends, then I shall have no issue either.' He made a wry face at that, but said nothing extra.

'He's a married man!' said Edmund, a tad louder and higher-pitched than he meant to. 'I can't-'

'You saw as well as I that the Star's Daughter remained with her father at the gates to Aslan's Country. She has her rest and her reward. Ed, you waited so long. He waited longer. When you didn't go and greet him, he looked destroyed. Will you please stop being such a stubborn ass and go to him? Please? I've got fifty different monarchs from the ages of Narnia to deal with and assign court posts to and I'd really quite like it if you could help me with that.'

'Forty-seven,' said Edmund absently, looking over at where Caspian, dark-faced and almost sullen, was riding. 'Keep Cor and Corin and Aravis away from most of the Caspians until they've got used to each other, unless you want a war.'

'See? Already, you know what to do and who to speak with. And that's with only half a functioning brain. You are going to go and speak with Caspian if I have to tie you to your horse and drag you there.'

'Will it induce you to shut up if I go and talk to Caspian?'

'It will induce me to shut up if you go and talk to Caspian and come back here with your mind on the job.'

'Fine.'

Edmund nudged his horse to a trot and caught up with the dark-haired King.

'Caspian?'

'Edmund.'

This hadn't gone so well so far. They rode in silence for some time.

'Why didn't you greet me, at the gates?' asked Caspian quietly.

'What ought I to have said?' Edmund replied. 'What can an old lover say to a married man?'

'... She knew, you know. She knew about you and I. She guessed as much when I returned from the East, that day.' Caspian's dark eyes bore into Edmund's. 'It was duty, you know that. I did what I had to do.'

'I know. I talked you into it,' said Edmund, trying to smile. 'And so now, by my own doing, you are out of my reach.'

'Never,' whispered Caspian passionately. 'Here we are released of all that makes us unhappy. She is with her people now, and we are together, and if you feel as I then there is nothing that can part us again, until the utter end of all that is.'

Cair Paravel was in sight now, her pennants flying in glorious salute to the homecoming procession of monarchs. On the westernmost tower, two flags were flying. One the silver table on green that Edmund remembered with soaring heart was always his personal sigil, and one a golden ship on black, seven stars in the field above it. Edmund twisted in his saddle, to look back at his brother. Peter smiled crookedly, and pointed at Lucy.

'Edmund?' asked Caspian.

Edmund smiled. 'If you can wait long enough for me to sort out my brother's court, then I am yours for as long as you'll have me.'
